Oak Flat, an area of Arizona sacred to the San Carlos Apache, is a piece of public land slated to be handed over to a mining company. Congressional leaders have now introduced the Save Oak Flat Act, and we need your help to be sure it passes.

Earlier this month, the US Forest Service withdrew its highly flawed environmental review of the project. While this is great news, Oak Flat could still become an open pit mine if we don’t act now.

This is our best chance to permanently protect Oak Flat. Tell your member of Congress to support this important bill!

Message:

The site of the proposed Resolution Copper Mine in Arizona, known as Oak Flat, is sacred to multiple Indigenous communities, including the San Carlos Apache, and still used for ceremonial purposes today. It is also a popular recreational destination, with a campground used by, among others, rock climbers, who would suffer the largest loss of a public climbing resource in US history. The legislation mandating the federal land transfer enabling the massive copper mine to proceed was never in the public interest. Standalone legislation to pass the exchange failed a dozen times on its own merit. Only when it was buried within the 2015 National Defense Authorization Act did it finally pass Congress, because few even knew it was there. On March 1, the US Forest Service withdrew the highly flawed Final Environmental Impact Statement for the mine. Three separate lawsuits challenging the validity of the FEIS centered on issues of Tribal consultation, water availability, and inadequate analysis of the mine’s proposed sprawling infrastructure. In light of the overwhelming public opposition to the mine and the Forest Service’s decision to rescind the faulty FEIS, I am asking you to support the Save Oak Flat Act (H.R.1884/S.915). Congress protected Oak Flat nearly 70 years ago, Congress consistently voted against a mine at Oak Flat, and only through contemptible insider maneuvers did the land exchange “pass.” Please honor the virtually unanimous opposition to the destruction of Oak Flat and support the Save Oak Flat Act.
