President Biden's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing to cut fracking's climate & toxic air pollution.

That’s good news because the oil and gas industry is the nation’s largest industrial methane polluter -- and methane is 86x worse for climate than carbon dioxide. It’s also good because when oil and gas production releases methane, it also emits toxins like benzene -- a carcinogen.

These rules are one of President Biden’s few opportunities to protect health and climate without Congressional obstruction. Unfortunately the oil and gas industry is pressuring the President and EPA to issue weak rules.

We need you to let EPA know why you want the strongest methane protections possible — tell them so below! Strong rules mean no exemptions for polluting wells, no burning methane as waste, and requiring action on residents’ pollution complaints (among other things).

There is no time to waste. Each year, the oil and gas industry releases 16 million metric tons of methane into the atmosphere, and without swift federal action, methane pollution from the industry will continue to skyrocket.

Administrator Regan, Each year, the oil and gas industry releases 16 million metric tons of methane into the atmosphere. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas and is responsible for a quarter of the warming that we are experiencing today. When methane is released so are toxic volatile organic compounds including benzene, a carcinogen, and smog precursors. In the United States, over 17 million people live close enough to oil and gas operations to threaten their health with toxic air pollution that oil and gas production emits alongside methane. Reducing methane pollution from the oil and gas industry is the single fastest, most cost-effective way to slow the rate of warming and protect community health. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed new safeguards to cut methane and associated toxics from new and existing oil and gas operations. In order to better protect the climate and frontline communities, EPA must make improvements to the proposed rule, including: - Ensuring frequent leak detection and repair inspections at all wells, including regular monitoring of small, leak-prone wells. - Stopping the wasteful and polluting practice of routine flaring of associated gas from oil wells. - Allowing community monitoring data collected from frontline communities and other third parties to assist EPA in the implementation and enforcement of the methane safeguards. - Require monitoring and plugging of abandoned wells that are leaking methane. There is no time to waste, EPA must take ambitious action and implement comprehensive, new and existing source rules to cut methane pollution from the oil and gas sector before it’s too late.
