Act Now to Protect Norwegian Fjords from Mine Waste

Nordic Mining started work on a mine that would dump 250 million tonnes of mine waste into a National Salmon Fjord. Norwegian allies have been fighting hard for years to stop Nordic’s disastrous plans to pollute the fjord, and they aren’t backing down now.

For two weeks, mine-impacted community members and activists from across Norway locked themselves to Nordic Mining’s machinery, stopping the company from advancing the Engebø mine. So far dozens of people have been arrested and thousands more are waiting to take their place.

One of the key backers of the project is U.S. chemical manufacturer KRONOS Worldwide Inc. Help us demand KRONOS cancel their agreement with Nordic Mining.

We write with concern regarding your company’s rutile offtake agreement with Nordic Mining for the Engebø open-pit mine in Norway. The project poses serious environmental risks and has caused social conflict due to the company’s use of submarine tailings disposal. According to a recent poll, 80% of Norwegians oppose submarine tailings at the Engebø mine. Activists are using civil disobedience to stop mine construction.<br><br>The Engebø mine is located on the shores of a designated National Wild Salmon Fjord, sporting rich spawning grounds for fish, and home to orca whales and white-tailed eagles. The Førdefjord has been independently verified to be among the cleanest in Norway. Nordic Mining’s tailings management plan consists of disposing 250 million tonnes of waste into the fjord, including the chemical SIBX which is highly toxic to marine life. Devastating impacts from submarine tailings disposal are well documented across the globe, including in the Jøssingfjord in Norway, where marine life has still not recovered after 35 years.<br><br>Nordic Mining’s decision to use submarine tailings disposal, despite the environmental cost and social opposition, is unacceptable. We demand you cancel the offtake agreement for rutile from Nordic Mining’s Engebø mine.
