Oil company Sentinel Midstream and financier Freepoint Commodities plan to build a massive crude oil storage facility, onshore and offshore 42-inch pipelines, and an oil export terminal off the Texas Gulf Coast. Called GulfLink, the project would load up to 2 million barrels of crude oil per day onto crude carriers for export oil to foreign markets.
Increased crude oil infrastructure for exports spells disaster for our climate. Overseas markets are driving the export of oil from the Permian Basin. Situated in west Texas and Southeast New Mexico, the Permian is the largest carbon bomb on the planet. Projects like GulfLink threaten to unleash massive carbon emissions in the Gulf and the Permian. Now is the time to stop it if we are to have a chance to lead the world in clean energy and achieve President-elect Biden’s climate goals of a Carbon Pollution Free Power Sector by 2035 and Net-Zero emissions by 2050.
The Maritime Administration (MARAD) and US Coast Guard (USCG) have the authority to deny GulfLink’s permits. If enough of us make our voices heard, we can pressure these federal agencies to do their job, protect our coast and our climate, and stop GulfLink!
