Tell the Army Corps to Reject GulfLink!

The oil and gas industry is encroaching on the wetlands, dunes, beaches, and waterways of the Gulf Coast -- jeopardizing the health and wellbeing of the people and wildlife in the region. Now, oil company Sentinel Midstream and financier Freepoint Commodities are proposing to build a massive, dangerous crude export terminal off the coast of Freeport, Texas. The project is called the Texas GulfLink, and we have until January 4 to make our voices heard.

The GulfLink project includes a total of over 46 miles of pipeline, both on and offshore. The pipelines would traverse through fragile wetlands, the longtime industrially polluted Brazos River Delta, the Justin Hurst Wildlife Management Area, and out into gulf waters. A spill anywhere along the route will be nearly impossible to clean up, altering these fragile ecosystems forever.

The Army Corps has the authority to Stop GulfLink and protect the streams, rivers, and wetlands along the Gulf. We need you to help hold the Army Corps accountable - our waterways are too valuable to sacrifice for more oil exports. Take action and tell the Army Corps to stop GulfLink!

Message:

I’m writing to urge the Army Corps to deny permits for the Texas GulfLink crude export terminal, and to express my concerns about the risks that GulfLink poses to Gulf waters, as well as inland rivers, streams, and wetlands. GulfLink’s inland pipeline route will cross the Brazos River and miles of wetlands. During construction numerous acres of vital, protective wetland vegetation will be destroyed. Sea grasses and other wetland vegetation are critical nesting grounds for endangered species and absorb storm surge impacts, creating a buffer that prevents flooding in adjacent communities. When these pipelines rupture or leak, it will cause irreparable harm to the fragile ecosystems and communities and wildlife that depend on them. The offshore pipelines and platforms that will load Very Large Crude Carriers at a rate of 2 million barrels per day pose a significant risk to marine life and human communities up and down the coast. An oil spill would harm local fishing and tourism industries, destroy nesting grounds for the Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle, which is critically endangered, and ruin beaches and dunes for generations to come.

GulfLink will be an export terminal - none of the oil will serve U.S. interests. The risk to our Gulf communities and ecosystems is too great for the profit of a private company and their investors. I respectfully ask that you schedule public hearings so that you can fully understand the impacts that GulfLink will have on the region and the people and wildlife live along the Gulf coast.
