Hello, We face an existential climate crisis, and must move quickly to convert our infrastructure to support low-carbon energy--but the clean energy transition cannot be built on dirty mining. More than a century of reckless mining has poisoned the air, water, and land of too many communities. We must address the shortcomings of the archaic 1872 Mining Law to protect the lands and waters of Indigenous and other mining-affected communities. I urge you to sponsor the Clean Energy Minerals Reform Act of 2022, which will be introduced next week by Representative Grijalva and Senator Heinrich. It will protect water and wildlife habitat through mine cleanup standards, provide a fair return to taxpayers with a royalty on new mining operations, prevent irresponsible mining by allowing land managers to balance mining with other uses for public lands, and create an Abandoned Mine Land Fund to address the long-standing hazards of abandoned mines. We can avoid repeating the mistakes of the fossil fuel era by meeting the demand for critical minerals in the most sustainable way possible: by recycling, reusing, and extending the life of materials and products we already have. Where new mining is necessary, we must take special care to protect communities and natural resources, particularly those relied on by Indigenous peoples and protected by treaties. The only way to do so is to reform the 1872 Mining Law. Thank you,
