President Biden's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing to cut fracking's climate & toxic air pollution.
That’s good news because the oil and gas industry is the nation’s largest industrial methane polluter -- and methane is 86x worse for climate than carbon dioxide. It’s also good because when oil and gas production releases methane, it also emits toxins like benzene -- a carcinogen.
These rules are one of President Biden’s few opportunities to protect health and climate without Congressional obstruction. Unfortunately the oil and gas industry is pressuring the President and EPA to issue weak rules.
We need you to let EPA know why you want the strongest methane protections possible — tell them so below! Strong rules mean no exemptions for polluting wells, no burning methane as waste, and requiring action on residents’ pollution complaints (among other things).
There is no time to waste. Each year, the oil and gas industry releases 16 million metric tons of methane into the atmosphere, and without swift federal action, methane pollution from the industry will continue to skyrocket.
We need your help to stand up and speak with a united voice against more drilling on public lands and off our coasts!
The latest United Nations climate report couldn’t be more clear, the next few years will determine the collective future for all life on this planet.
To avoid the most cataclysmic effects of climate change and the acceleration of wildlife extinctions, global greenhouse gas emissions must hit their final peak by 2025 -- and then swiftly drop.
Increasing floods, fires, heat waves, storms, and droughts are already impacting Americans, our infrastructure, our food supply, and our national security.
As communities impacted by the current climate crisis, we are calling on you, President Biden and Administrator Regan to take action to end dangerous loopholes in the current draft of EPA regulations now.
I’m deeply concerned with the health impacts of air pollution and climate change. That’s why I was encouraged to learn that EPA is working on a supplemental proposal to address methane and other harmful air pollution from new and existing oil and gas operations.
However, EPA final rule must be strong and comprehensive to address the gaps in last year’s proposed methane rule which could allow some of the worst polluters to go without regular leak detection and repair inspections.
We are urging EPA to require regular inspections at high-polluting small wells with leak-prone equipment and eliminate routine flaring, both of which are outsize sources of methane emissions.
Additionally, EPA must commit to community monitoring programs and work to incorporate data generated by community groups. And finally, EPA must include a requirement to use equipment that does not emit pollution at well sites.
Reducing methane pollution is one of the best levers we have to slow the rate of climate change right now, and it will help clean up the air to protect children’s health.
Federal methane rules will establish vital protections for all children across the nation, especially for states that have failed to enact meaningful oil and gas methane protections at the state level.
Please ensure that EPA swiftly proposes strong methane rules by the end of this summer to protect our communities.
